INDIANAPOLIS - If Ta'Shia Phillips wasn't head and shoulders above everyone else in the Miss Basketball race, she solidified that spot Saturday night.

With 29 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots, Phillips led her Brebeuf Jesuit Braves past Wawasee 51-43 in the 3A state championship at Conseco Fieldhouse.[[In-content Ad]]"She put us on her back tonight," said Brebeuf Jesuit coach Kendall Kreinhagen.

While Wawasee's gameplan was to penetrate to either kick out or take a 15-foot jumper for most of the game, Brebeuf's gameplan was basically to walk down the court, throw the ball to Phillips, have everyone else get out of the way and let her dominate.

Only three other players scored for the Braves as Ivie Obeime came off the bench to tally nine points while starters Lauren Meadows and Callie Curry had seven and six points, respectively.

The 6-foot-6 center finished 12 of 15 from the field while the rest of the Braves were just 8 of 24.

Wawasee's Shawn Knafel, Jessie Wolf and Terra Weisser battled Phillips all night but the highly-touted Miss Basketball candidate was just too much.

Phillips, who decommitted from Purude and is still undecided on her college choice, was held relatively in check in the first half.

The result was the Warriors trailed Brebeuf 20-19 after 16 minutes.

Wawasee knotted the score at 38-all after three quarters and the two teams were tied at 40-all early in the fourth quarter after Wolf hit a jumper.

From that point on, Wawasee committed forced and unforced turnovers, was pushed out by the Braves' extended defense and couldn't connect on any shots.

Junior Kalyn Lantz, who finished with 10 points, hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to make the score 45-43 with less than three minutes left in the game.

The Warriors failed to scored the rest of the game as the Braves won the game from the foul line.

Brebeuf did just enough as it hit 5 of 13 free throws in the final 1:34 to earn its second 3A crown in four years.

Wawasee looked like it had figured out Brebeuf's defense in the third quarter as the Warriors, namely Taylor Goshert, got hot from outside.

Goshert hit three from beyond the arc as the Warriors tied up the contest.

Goshert, one of eight players for Wawasee who will return next year, led the Warriors with a team-high 13 points on just 5-of-19 shooting from the field.

The Warriors shot just 16 of 50 from the field as a team. When Wawasee drove the lane, Phillips caused the Warriors to alter their shots.

Wawasee had trouble all night driving into the lane too deep, then had trouble getting off shots.

That also forced Wawasee into 22 turnovers on the evening.

"Our turbos were too fast," said Zolman.

Despite the loss, Zolman was proud of his team's effort and attitude.

"I couldn't be prouder of a group of young kids," said Zolman of his team. "They did our community well, they did their parents well, I couldn't be prouder."

Senior Megan Walker was an example of that as she won the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award for Class 3A.

The award is presented annually to a senior participant in each class, who was nominated by her principal and coach and has demonstrated excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance presented a $1,000 scholarship to Wawasee High School in the name of Walker.

Walker finished with three points, while sophomore Brennan McAdams had seven. Wolf had four points while Kylee Ort, Shawn Knafel and Terra Weisser each had two points.

Wawasee finished the season with a 22-4 record, while Brebeuf concluded its season with a 23-6 record.

Two of Wawasee's four losses came to Brebeuf. The other two came to East Noble and Class 4A state champion South Bend Washington.
