ROCHESTER - Phillip Eugene "Gene" Melton, 74, of 263 W. Olson Road, Rochester, died at 3:20 a.m. Sept. 20, 2008, at the Munson Medical Center, Traverse City, Mich., where he was a patient for two weeks.

He was born Jan. 22, 1934, in McRoberts, Ky., to Bernard and Sylvia Skidmore Melton. On June 8, 1991, in Rochester, he married Sharyn "Shari" Robison, who survives.

He was a 1952 Rochester High School graduate and retired from the Rochester Fire Dept. after 31 years, serving as chief from 1980-87. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving from 1952-56. He also worked at Burton Plumbing & Heating, AIRVAC and Fulton County Beverage.

Also surviving are three daughters, Tomi (and spouse Ron) Brock and Mitzi (and spouse Craig) Burton, all of Rochester, and Anjanette Grosvenor (and fiance Michael Paul), Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Doug (and spouse Kelley) Biggs, Rochester, and Gregg (and spouse Robin) Biggs, New Palestine; nine grandchildren; and three brothers, Thomas (and spouse Eileen) Melton, Donathon, Mo.; Kenneth Menton, Copnish, Mich.; and Harold Melton, Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, with Thomas Melton officiating. Burial will be in Rochester IOOF Cemetery with full firemen's and military honors.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
