There are 200,000 women diagnosed a year with breast cancer, and 40,000 women die each year from the disease.

That is why a grassroots group of Indiana activists who support breast cancer research is asking supporters to buy and send in lottery tickets to fund breast cancer research.

The Catherine Peachy Fund is partnering with the Hoosier Lottery for the Give Us A Chance! To Beat Breast Cancer! campaign.

The Catherine Peachy Fund began 13 years ago as Peachy, an Indianapolis woman, was losing her battle with breast cancer. She asked members of the Indiana Breast Cancer Coalition to continue her fight.

The fund was started by her husband, Norman Metzger, before she died in 1994.

There have been many efforts in Warsaw to bring in proceeds for the fund.

A cookbook was published in 1995 and printed by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. as one of many fundraisers done in Warsaw to raise funds for the Catherine Peachy Fund.

The mission of the fund is to promote advances in breast cancer research and programs for the early detection, prevention and treatment of breast cancer, according to Connie Rufenbarger, Warsaw.

Rufenbarger is the director of project development and trustee of the Catherine Peachey Fund.

Rufenbarger, 62, was diagnosed with breast cancer at ages 34 and 52.

The goal with the new campaign is to raise $5 million to fund additional research projects to move science closer to understanding the cause and the potential cures for breast cancer.

Since 1994 when the fund was started, $3 million has been raised for the fund.

Several years ago when breast cancer researchers reported they were not able to complete research because they lacked samples of normal breast tissue, the fund partnered with the I.U. Simon Cancer Center to step up and fill the need.

The effort has grown to become the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at the I.U. Simon Cancer Tissue Bank.

People are advised to not scratch off tickets before mailing them. The Catherine Peachey Fund will scan the tickets for processing.

Any lottery ticket is accepted, including scratch-off tickets of any type or value, as well as draw game tickets such as Powerball, Mega Millions, Hoosier Lotto, Mix & Match and Lucky 5 tickets.

Tickets sent to the Catherine Peachy Fund are donations to the fund.

Those purchasing lottery tickets are advised to sign the back of the ticket with The Catherine Peachy Fund or Peachy Fund and send the ticket to The Catherine Peachy Fund, P.O. Box 1823 Warsaw, IN 46580.

The Catherine Peachey Fund also accepts cash donations, which may be sent to the same address.

One hundred percent of all cash donations goes directly to breast cancer research in Indiana. The operating costs for the fund are 3 percent due to its strong volunteer base.

Information is posted on the Catherine Peachey Fund website, www.catherinepeacheyfund.org
