Penn Track Team Downs Warsaw
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw girls track coach Paul Boyd lays claim to a feat very few high school coaches can or ever will be able to: He coaches sports at two different high schools.
Besides his position as track coach at WCHS, Boyd also coaches the soccer team at Wawasee High School.
"It's two different seasons," said Boyd when asked if it could be tedious or hectic at times. "It works out well."
As far as coaching at two schools who are bitter rivals Boyd said: "Kids are kids."
He is also fortunate enough to have two family members on the track team with him, daughters Summer and Chelsea.
"I'm pretty lucky," said Paul Boyd. "Not too many people get to do this."
In his first year at Warsaw's helm, Boyd said he just wanted to more or less feed off last year's team and go from there.
"Our goal was to improve upon last year," he said. "The numbers are nice. We have a lot of numbers. We have 43 kids on the roster this year. The previous staff got the ball rolling. Now it's my job to keep it rolling."
Thursday night Warsaw hosted Penn but fell to the Kingsmen 68-55, dropping their record to 1-1 on the young season. Despite the 13-point loss, Paul Boyd spoke of the positives.
"Oh yeah, there was a lot of positives," he said. "Kim Kurosky got 4-foot-10 in the high jump then turned around and ran 2:40 in the 800. Chelsea Boyd had a strong finish in the 400, and the freshmen have been stepping up. Wiggins placed fourth in the hurdles to improve over her last time. It's the little things like just improving that is lifting this team."
Warsaw placed first in seven of the 15 events. Ginny Gardonio ruled the throwing events with respective tosses of 86-3 and 32-5.5 in the discus and shot. Both were good enough for first. With her jump of 4-10 Kurosky finished the high jump competition on top. Hilary Barlow dominated the 3,200 with an impressive time of 12:05.
And then there were Boyd's daughters.
Summer took first-place finishes in the 800 and 1,600 runs as well as being part of the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams. Chelsea claimed the top spot in the 400 and was a member of the winning 1,600 relay team.
Warsaw will be in action again April 15 in Plymouth in a triangular meet with Plymouth and Northridge.
