Penguin Point Partners with Kosciusko Red Cross for Project S.A.F.E.

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Staff Report-

Kosciusko Red Cross volunteers will be out in full force this weekend for Project S.A.F.E. (Smoke Alarms For Everyone) to hand out fire safety information to 3,000 homes. And when they finish, they will be rewarded.

Registered volunteers for Project S.A.F.E. will receive a free swiss steak lunch, compliments of Penguin Point Black-Tie Catering, following the event at the Kosciusko Community Foundation Building, located at 102 E Market St. (corner of Market and Buffalo streets).

Volunteers will be canvassing numerous neighborhoods throughout Kosciusko County from 10 a.m. until noon with information packets which include a 9-volt battery for each home. Homes without a detector will be given one, or a certificate to fill out and bring to their local fire department for a free detector.

The families of Kosciusko County are at greater risk from fire than any other disaster so the local Red Cross takes time each year to distribute fire safety information and batteries. The American Red Cross of Kosciusko County has assisted numerous families who have suffered the trauma of a home fire.

It is part of the Red Cross mission to help communities prepare for disaster and encourage people to take steps to minimize the risk of potentially preventable disasters like home fires, by remembering two key fire safety steps: install a working smoke alarm and develop a fire escape plan.

A functioning smoke alarm is the single most important factor in preventing deaths or injuries from a home fire, according to Kosciusko Red Cross.
