FRANKFORT -ÊAfter the Tippecanoe Valley/Pendleton Heights semistate semifinal game, Brandon Eaton was stopped by a television news team for a comment while the rest of the Valley squad walked off the court. When Eaton walked off the floor with assistant coach Chad Patrick, fans from both Valley and Pendleton Heights gave him a roaring round of applause.

Although a 53-47 loss to Pendleton is not quite how he would have liked to end his season, Eaton earned the respect of Viking fans and Arabian fans alike.

The Vikings jump-started the first quarter when Anthony Domenico sank a three-pointer at the 6:57 point for the first basket of the game.

But Pendleton was not down for long. Traver Griffin netted a layup and Ryan Lee hit a three-pointer to give Pendleton Heights a 5-3 lead.

Craig Kuhn tied the score at five with 5:08 left in the frame, and at the end of the first quarter, the score was knotted at 11-11.

The Arabians took a 15-11 lead in the second quarter after Griffin netted two free throws and a basket. Cody New hit a three-pointer to cut the Arabian lead to one, 15-14.

After another Griffin basket, Dax Snyder was fouled as he took a shot under the basket. The shot was good, and Snyder hit the ensuing free throw to tie the score at 17.

Valley and Pendleton Heights battled through the rest of the quarter, and by the end of the half, the Arabians held a 27-25 advantage.

Craig Kuhn tied the score at 27 on the first drive of the second half, and New hit a basket to give the Vikings a 29-27 lead with 6:50 remaining in the third stanza.

But Lee hit two from the charity stripe to tie the score again, 29-29. Then Justin Rummell hit a three-pointer to give Pendleton Heights a 32-29 lead.

By the end of the third, Pendleton built a 41-35 lead it did not relinquish for the rest of the game.

"If we had gotten ahead in the third quarter," said Valley coach Bill Patrick, "I think it would have been a different game."

In the final quarter of play, Valley got as close as two points, 43-41, with 6:19 remaining, but Pendleton Heights outscored the Vikings 8-4 in the last minutes of the frame to earn a 53-47 victory.

Cody New led the Vikings with 13 points and five rebounds, while Trey Eaton added 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 shooting from the free throw line.

The Arabian defense honed in on Brandon Eaton and held him to just two points in the game.

"The big key for them was defense," said Patrick. "They were all over Brandon (Eaton). It looked to me like there should have been a few more fouls called on them. They manhandled him the whole game."

Griffin led the Pendleton Heights squad with 19 points and eight rebounds. He was 7 of 7 from the field. Lee added 11 points, including two shots from behind the three-point arc.

"The big kid, Griffin, he's tough," said Patrick. "He's a very nice player for them."

Valley finishes the season 19-6.

"We had a good year," said Patrick. "I thought this was a game we could win, but it just didn't work out that way. We had a good group of seniors and we'll lose some good players. But we have six kids back next year, and that will be something to start with."

When senior Brandon Eaton walked off the court after the game, a sea of fans in yellow T-shirts stood sadly and clapped as they watched him go. The good-bye from the stands showed him how much he meant to the Valley team.
