He was born Nov. 8, 1941, to Burrell and Pauline Barley Petty.
He graduated from Fortville High School in 1959; earned a bachelor's degree in education at Butler University; and received a master's degree in counseling. He was a teacher and basketball coach at several schools throughout the years including Eaton and Mentone high schools, the University of Southern Colorado State and Madison Shawe. After retiring, he worked at Warsaw Black Oxide for 17 years. He was a member of Mentone Masonic Lodge 576 F&AM, Scottish Rite, Shriners, Moose Lodge and American Legion. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved his grandchildren.
Surviving are his children: Jay (and spouse Teresa) Petty, Muncie; Alex Glenn Petty, Fishers; Jennifer (and spouse Scott) Willoughby, Aurora; and Byron (and spouse Elizabeth) Petty, Columbus, Ohio; siblings, Joan Brown, Indianapolis, Jerry, Jim and Bob Petty, all of Fortville; grandchildren: Jaime, Sam, Hannah, Jacob, Reagan, Reese, Ryan, Maxwell and Wade; a great-granddaughter, Gracie; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Nicholas Petty.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Erlewein Mortuary, Fortville.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m.
