He was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Milan F. and Mary G. Gumminger Lillis. In 1951, in Virginia Beach, Va., he married Leslie Ann Weary, who survives.
He was one of Leahey's Lads and captain of the undefeated 1941 Notre Dame football team. He was a member of the Notre Dame Monogram Club and the Sorin Society. In World War II, Lieutenant Lillis served as a PT Boat captain in the South Pacific and received the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He started his career in sales and later purchased Liquified Industrial Gasses where be became, for a time, the cryogenics expert of the Midwest. After retiring to Hampstead, N.C., he became a drive force behind and founding member of St. Jude's Catholic Church. Moving to Winona Lake in 2004, he became an active member of the Sacred Heart parish.
Also surviving are his children, Leslie (and spouse Mark) Piazza, Warsaw, and Steve (and spouse Lynn) Lillis, Phoenix, Ariz.; and six grandchildren, Megan and Melissa Piazza, and Lisa, Laura, Stacie and Sean Lillis. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Milan F. Lillis, Buffalo, N.Y.; and a sister, Rita Marie Ernst, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 125 N. Harrison St., Warsaw. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military honors by members of Warsaw American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126.
McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Drive, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.
