Patron Asks For Tippy Bleacher Upgrades, Board Reorganizes

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

BURKET – Sue Bussard, Akron, goes to Tippecanoe Valley High School basketball games, but Monday night she asked the school board to consider fixing something before next season.
She asked the board to update the bleachers or at least do something about the steps. It’s really hard for some people to go up and down them.
Board member Rod Eaton told her the board has talked about putting rails on the bleachers. Bussard responded there are rails there, but it’s the steps that are the problem. They are too high. She sees more and more people having trouble getting up the steps.
“Maybe it’s something you can look at and consider,” she said.
During the meeting, the board also reorganized.
In the past, board member Mark Wise said, Valley reorganized in July. Due to new state regulations, it now has to be done in January.
The board elected Bryan Murphy to serve as president in 2013, Wise as vice president, and Dave O’Brien as secretary.
Deputy Treasurer Jennifer Barden was appointed the corporation’s treasurer.
Barden’s appointment follows the  recent death of former treasurer Sherri Adamson. Adamson’s death was ruled a suicide. Prior to her death, Adamson was questioned regarding irregularities in the corporation’s finances. The board did not discuss the Adamson case, but did express condolences to her family and friends.
For the past few years, the board has met at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. O’Brien made a motion to change the meeting time to 6:30 p.m. He said Valley has people who come to their meetings from Indianapolis as well as “sports” people, and moving the meeting an hour earlier will save them time.
Wise said he liked it at 7:30 p.m., but if the board said 7 p.m., he would be there.
Eaton said he liked 7, if they were going to split the difference.
Tom Craft, who was sworn in as a new board member replacing Hal Hoffman, said he liked 6:30 p.m., too. He has a job that requires him to get up early in the morning.
O’Brien, Murphy and Craft voted in favor of 6:30 p.m., and Wise and Eaton were opposed. The motion passed.
The board all agreed, however, that the meetings will remain on the second Monday of each month. Meetings will be held at the administration office in the summer; at each of the school buildings during the first few months of the year; and at Mentone Elementary the rest of the year.
In other business, the board:
• Approved the student media policies as presented at the board’s December meeting by teacher and “Runic Review” adviser Melanie Mason and her newspaper staff.
• Heard a presentation on the Burket Education Center. The alternative school started in fall 2003, and a total of 212 students have graduated through it since it’s inception.
• Heard a report from Superintendent Brett Boggs on the school corporation’s school accreditation process. The internal review is almost complete, and the external review is coming up in February.
• Approved a resolution to transfer appropriations within the general fund. One was for $15,420.03, and the other was for $600,000.
• Approved the resignations of bus driver Priscilla Crill, bus driver Sue Gagnon and TVHS head baseball coach Ryan Moore.
Wise recognized Crill and Gagnon for their 32 and 37 years respectively of service.
• Approved the spring driver education program.
• Approved the overnight trip to Merrillville semi-state for the TVHS wrestling team.
• Announced upcoming board meetings will be: Feb. 11, 6:30 p.m., Tippecanoe Valley Middle School; March 11, 6:30 p.m., Tippecanoe Valley High School; and April 15, 6:30 p.m., Akron Elementary School.
After the regular meeting, the board held its annual board of finance meeting.
Murphy and O’Brien were approved as its president and secretary respectively.
The 2012 register of investments was presented. No board action was required.[[In-content Ad]]
