SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊA sign in the Tippecanoe Valley stands said it all to Whitko: "Thanks 4 Patrick."

The Vikings helped give that sign more meaning when they defeated Whitko 69-53 Friday night.

Second-year Tippecanoe Valley coach Bill Patrick returned to Whitko, where he previously coached for 29 years and led the Wildcats to a 478-180 record. He resigned in 1995 after clashing with the administration.

The trip to Whitko's gym was his second as Valley coach. Patrick coached the Vikings in their 111-107 double overtime loss in the 1998 Whitko Sectional.

Valley jumped out to an early lead over Whitko in the first quarter when the Vikings scored seven unanswered points to open the game. The Viking defense held the Wildcat offense scoreless until a J.R. Manuel basket Whitko's first points of the game with 5:00 on the clock.

The Vikings then went up 10-2 before Whitko's Bryan Howard sank a basket and was fouled on the play. After Howard hit from the charity stripe, the score was 10-5.

By the end of the first quarter, Valley held a 15-9 lead. Whitko cut Valley's lead to four when Shane Henderson hit two free throws to make the score 15-11.

But then the Viking offense started to kick in, and soon Valley held a 26-16 lead with 1:51 left in the first half.

Whitko managed to cut the Viking lead to eight, 30-22, at the half, but Brandon Eaton restored the double-figure lead by hitting the first basket of the second half.

The Wildcats fought back to within six again when Ben Ryan hit two free throws with 6:41, but Valley refused to let its lead dwindle any further.

Over the next 5:02, the Vikings went on an 11-2 run to build their lead to 15 points, 43-28.

At the end of the quarter, Valley held a commanding 48-31 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The fourth quarter was much like the rest as Whitko was unable to overcome the Viking lead. The Wildcats got within 13 points but no closer, and Valley left Whitko with a 69-53 win.

"I felt they set the tone early," said Whitko coach Steve Pickett. "We dug a hole early and we struggled after that. For an inexperienced team, a team that hasn't won, it's difficult to dig out of a situation like that."

In all, Valley was 22-of-48 shooting while Whitko was 20 of 57. However, the difference in the game came at the free throw line. Valley hit 22 of 32 free throws, while Whitko connected on 9 of 12.

"We didn't play real well," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "The kids played hard and they hustled, but we didn't look real smooth.

"I guess I can't complain, though. We won a big conference game, and now we are 2-0 in the conference.

Valley had four starters in double figures, with Eaton leading the pack at 18. Anthony Domenico scored 14 points, while Noah Silveus added 13 and Dax Snyder had 11.

"We had four players in double figures," said Patrick. "It's good to see we can have other players who can score. Our bench did a good job when we got in foul trouble early."

Howard led the Whitko squad with 19 points, and Henderson netted 11 for the Wildcats.

"I felt the effort from us was much better this week than it was against Central Noble last Saturday," said Pickett. "The effort and the emotion was much better tonight."

Valley improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Three Rivers Conference, while Whitko falls to 0-5 and 0-2.

Valley has the night off but hosts Peru at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
