The Warsaw Parks Department Board Tuesday approved the use of the Richardson - DuBois Park on Market Street as an ice skating rink this winter.

Brian Smith of the Northern Lakes Skating Association attended the meeting. The park will work with him to put the ice rink together.

Board member Don Clemens said there aren't enough recreational activities in the winter and the town needs a year-round skating and ice hockey facility. The rest of the board agreed.

In other business:

• Parks Department director Jon Garber said he talked with the inspector for the Indiana Health Department about the Pike Lake campground.

The water and sewer lines at the campground run too close together. To meet state standards they must be at least 100 feet apart.

Garber said the campground will probably have to get city water. He said the Parks Department has until 2002 to fix the problem.

"City water out there is the way to go," Clemens said.

• Garber gave an update on the building plans for the Hire Park BMX site. Track president Rich Kellstrom had told the board at its previous meeting of the plans to build a recreation and concession building at Hire Park.

Garber said there is a possibility of delay for the building. It will not be up next year but maybe the year after.

The Warsaw Parks Board members are: president Toby Sumpter; vice president John Sadler; Don Clemens; Bob Richmond; Cathy Folk, school board representative; and Jeff Grose, Warsaw City Council representative. [[In-content Ad]]
