The Warsaw Parks and Recreation Board discussed departmental budgets and reviewed its proposed financial statements for 2007 Tuesday.

Department Head Jon Garber explained various increases in the department's accounts, saying the main spikes in this year's budget came from gasoline prices, a new air conditioning unit for the Pete Thorn Center and the purchase and installation of security lights inside Central Park.

Along with 3 percent increases in pay for salaried and hourly employees, the main parks and recreation budget totaled $1,579,540, an 8 percent increase from the same budget last year.

Garber said additional improvements to the Hire Park BMX track and Center Lake Pavilion are being considered, but funding must be found from other sources not related to the department's budgets.

The park department's cumulative capital improvement budget included $50,000 set aside for the improvement of Kelly Park tennis court. This project was scheduled for last year but was delayed after related funds were used to finish the new Glover Pavilion.

In other matters, a report on the classic rock concert was presented by Activity Director Janelle Wilson, who estimated 6,000-6,500 attendants at Central Park during the event.

Overall, people enjoyed the musical performances, Wilson said, with many preferring the opening band, the Buckinghams, over the headlining Turtles.

Results from a survey taken during the concert said that out of 143 responses, 140 would attend a similar park event in the future.

Now that the Glover Pavilion has proved its worth for the department, board members discussed whether the structure should have a public rental policy.

While Central Park itself can be rented, as well as the Center Lake Pavilion, members believed the Glover Pavilion would be too difficult to monitor during a rental period, and declined to create the new code.

Board members present were Bill Baldwin, Jon Sadler, Cathy Folk, Steve Haines and Toby Sumpter.

The next scheduled meeting is Aug. 15, with the July meeting cancelled. [[In-content Ad]]
