Warsaw Park Board heard a proposal for a legacy park to honor those battling or who have lost their lives to cancer during its meeting Tuesday night.

Kosciusko County Cancer Care committee members Missy Kirkham, Lois Niemier and Nicole Kelly approached the board with their proposal.

Niemier said the group has been planning to locate legacy parks in Warsaw, Winona Lake and Syracuse.[[In-content Ad]]"The idea is to have bricks with the names of cancer survivors and those who have passed away and have jeweled benches in an area of reflection," said Niemier.

The group was requesting for Central Park to be used as Warsaw's site for the legacy park.

Park Superintendent Jon Garber said his concern was that he would not want the project to interfere with the park activities and landscaping.

Park board member Tammy Dalton said she was concerned that the legacy park could set a precedent for allowing other organizations who want to create similar parks for their causes.

"We need to decide if this is something we want to allow," Dalton said.

Park Director Larry Plummer suggested locating the legacy park along Warsaw's Greenway trail system by Kosciusko Community Hospital.

Niemier said the idea would be for donors to purchase the bricks and perennials could be located in the legacy park along with benches.

Board member John Sadler suggested the group come up with design plans that defines the space needed for the legacy park.

He also suggested the committee come up with alternative locations for the legacy park then come back to the park board with those plans.

Sadler suggested the committee consider locating the legacy park at Pike Lake. He also said he was worried if the legacy park was located in Central Park the jeweled benches could be vandalized.

In other business, Plummer said there were seven trees damaged at Pike Lake, and an electrical pole fell into an RV at Pike Lake campground during the recent tornado.

He also said wood fiber safety matting has been installed at Lucerne Park for the newly upgraded play area.

Wood fiber materials are expected to come in next week for an upgrade to play ground equipment at Kelly Park.

Both picnic shelters at Central Park have been reroofed, Plummer said.
