Kosciusko Leadership Academy members Jeremiah Heierman, Kathy Stutzman, Aaron Christner and Lynne Dittman previously attended the board's Feb. 17 meeting to discuss their proposal for a splash park in Warsaw.
A splash park is an aquatic recreation system that provides combinations of interactive play for children and people with disabilities. It has no standing water and has an automated system where an individual presses a button or turns a nozzle on the equipment to signal the water to turn on. It also has interactive water play features for all ages, such as dumping buckets and waterwheels.[[In-content Ad]]During the board's March meeting, Park Director Larry Plummer gave a list of possible locations for the proposed splash park.
The possible locations Plummer recommended included Beyer Park east of the restrooms; Bixler Park north of the horseshoe pits; Boggs Park, south of the basketball courts; the east side of Hire Park; east of the shelter and south of the playground at Kelly Park; between the parking lot and the beach at the Municipal Park; and east of the basketball courts at Richardson-Dubois Park.
Park Superintendent Jon Garber Tuesday said Hire Park on Arthur Street has undeveloped area to the east side of the BMX track that might be a good location for the proposed splash park.
He said the closest restrooms are at Beyer Park and port-a-pots are located in the Hire Park parking lot.
"I think we all are in favor of a splash park, but a location needs to be decided on and funds need to be sought," Park Board President Bill Baldwin said.
Heierman said the KLA banquet is April 30, and the group is waiting to see if they will receive the Jean Northenor award. The award will allow the group to have architectural drawings completed for the proposed splash park.
Heierman said someone has expressed interest in providing an endowment to pay for water and sewer. The group also has looked at grants and have been contacted by people who would like to make financial donations.
He said it would take approximately three weeks to construct the splash park.
In other business, Garber informed the board he received a request from a Zimmer employee for an adult basketball league to play at Boggs Basketball courts.
Baldwin suggested the group provide proof of insurance.
"The ball is in their court at this point," Baldwin said.
Also during the meeting, Garber announced he received a letter of resignation Monday from Janelle Wilson, Warsaw Parks activities director. Wilson's last day will be May 15.
"Janelle has done a great job and we are in the process of interviewing people and accepting applications," Garber said.
He said Wilson will be missed and she has done a lot for the park programs.
She said she is resigning to spend more time with her children.
"I appreciate how all of you have allowed me to express myself through this job," Wilson said.
