Panthers Hold Off Determined Jimmies

ELKHART - It looked like one of those games in which one team would dominate another, the kind of game with the score ending up forty points apart. This was a good example of NorthWood and Jimtown Friday night. NorthWood pulled ahead of Jimtown 14-4 during the first quarter, but the Jimmies came back in the second half, narrowing the score within two. Despite Jimtown's comeback, the Panthers prevailed over the Jimmies 49-43.
NorthWood's early start was credited to Bobby Brown, who scored eight points, while Aaron Huber had a three and an assist to Brown in the first quarter.
"In this game, there was a change of plans," Coach Dan Gunn said, "Brown hasn't had a game like this in a while where he wasn't the leading scorer, but he still had a good game. Aaron Huber came through for us tonight by leading with 13 points."
Turnovers seemed to be the biggest problem for Jimtown. In the second quarter, the Jimmies gave up six turnovers on NorthWood steals from Huber and Charlie Roeder. With less than four minutes left in the first half, Nic Bradley was fouled on a three-point play, which stretched the score to 21-11, their biggest lead of the night.
"This is how I want our team to play," Gunn said. "Aggressiveness, I thought, was the key to this game."
But something happened to the "run-and-gun" Panthers in the second half. With a blink of an eye, Jimtown came within four early in the third with Adrian Pettis scoring six. The Jimmies halted NorthWood's offense by putting on the full-court press and forcing four turnovers. It was a different story at the end of the third, when Jimtown scored 19 points narrowing the lead within two at 34-32.
Jimtown's Jim House and Keith Kinder took on the Panther defense by scoring a total of 11 points. But the Jimmies were slowly dissolving as out of bounds plays came out unsuccessful. A three-pointer by Nate Baughman late in the fourth quarter was not enough to stop the run-and-gun Panthers. With 1:09 left in the game, NorthWood's Eric Zell was fouled underneath, making a pair of free throws. It was too late for another Jimtown comeback, now trailing by six, as the last seconds ticked off the clock.
"I wasn't worried about Jimtown's scoring drive in the start of the third." Gunn said. "It took our team to realize that Jimtown's no cakewalk."
NorthWood improves to 8-3, while Jimtown drops to 6-5. The Panthers host Elkhart Memorial today. [[In-content Ad]]
