NAPPANEE - Wawasee's girls soccer program already had that first win, and NorthWood was still searching for it.

The Warriors had gotten their first win last Saturday in a 4-1 victory over South Bend LaSalle.

Monday, it was NorthWood's turn.

Thanks to a goal by Tera Collins with less than two minutes to play, NorthWood won the first game in the history of its program on Monday night 2-1 over Wawasee.

NorthWood dominated play in the first half, but Wawasee got the big strike. On the Warriors' only strong offensive push of the first 15 minutes, Katie Brown scored at 32:21 to give Wawasee a 1-0 lead.

NorthWood continued to control the pace and play aggressive. Clark got numerous shots on goal for the Panthers, but Wawasee goalie Megan King turned away every opportunity. Then, with four minutes to play in the opening half, Wawasee began to assert itself.

The Warriors had four shots on goal over that span, but could not score. Their best chance came when Stacy Shipley broke free for a one-on-one situation against the NorthWood goalie, but was stuffed.

"We got outplayed in the first half," Wawasee head coach Rick Shipley said. "We just got lucky and put one up. When we got down there, we were messing around with the ball. We had times when we were too busy squaring the ball and we should have been going at it."

In the second half, Wawasee came out early and attempted to put NorthWood away. Brown and Missy Miller both had shots but could not find the back of the goal.

Then, at 31:23 to play, Latt Bounmythavong scored for the Panthers to tie the score at 1-1.

Wawasee came back again and made a large push with about 15 minutes to play, but still could not score.

Then, with just over one minute to play, NorthWood's Jamie Brock got a shot past King for the first victory in school history.

"I'm extremely disappointed," Shipley said. "We never set anything up, we never attacked the ball. It was like we were out here half asleep. It started that way, and it ended that way. We just got a win last week, and then to come out here and see this, there's no excuse for it. Megan King did a good job. The defensive wing let her down. They left her standing wide open."

"I've seen a lot of improvements, but there's still a lot of things that we need to work on," NorthWood head coach Jill Demitruk said. "We were a lot more aggressive tonight. We kept our heads up and played hard all night. I'm glad to get that first win over with. Now, we have to just keep building on this."

Wawasee (1-5) will host Goshen on Saturday at 11 a.m. NorthWood (1-2) is at Concord Tuesday. [[In-content Ad]]
