SOUTH WHITLEY – Palmer E. Welty, 84, of South Whitley, died at 10:26 a.m. Nov. 4, 2011, in Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.

He was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Huntington, to Clarence and Josephine Stookey Welty. On Nov. 14, 1948, he married Darlene Lofland, who survives.

He attended Huntington High School. He moved to Big Barbee Lake from Huntington, where he resided for 25 years. In 1996, he moved to South Whitley. He began his work career at Schacht Rubber Co., Huntington, where he worked for 25 years.  He then joined General Tire (General Corp) as a lead/set-up, retiring in 1989 with 25 years of service. His memberships included United Methodist Church of Huntington and AFL-CIO. He attended United Methodist Church of South Whitley for the past 14 years.

Also surviving are a grandson; three sisters, Martha VanWinkle, La Mesa, Calif.; Phyllis (and spouse Robert) Smuts, Grand Junction, Colo.; and Sharon (and spouse Curtis) Park, New Haven; two brothers, Carl Welty, Huntington, and Ray Welty, Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by a daughter and two brothers.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley, with the Rev. Robert Barton officiating. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
