OSSIAN -ÊFolks from all around the area showed up to see the 3A regional matchup between the No. 4 Norwell Knights and the No. 5 NorthWood Panthers.

The game was scoreless until just 1:16 was left in the first quarter. Matt Hanselman took the snap and tossed the ball back to Brad Schortgen for the flea-flicker. Schortgen then completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Landon Heyerly to give the Knights a 7-0 lead.
NorthWood then moved the ball down the field, and Charlie Roeder connected with Chaz Scherer on a 1-yard pass to put the Panthers on the board. After Andy Mitschelen's kick sailed through the uprights, the score was tied at seven.
The game would remain tied for only six minutes. On the next Norwell drive, the Knights moved the ball 58 yards on 12 plays and scored another touchdown. With 3:07 left in the half, Norwell held a 14-7 advantage.
NorthWood drove down to the 9-yard line on the next drive, but Norwell's Matthew Beste intercepted a Roeder pass to squelch the Panther rally.
Norwell moved to the Panther 46-yard line, but Roeder returned the favor when he intercepted a pass from the Knights. However, NorthWood had just 1.5 seconds to make something happen.
Roeder connected with Ian Reed on a 37-yard pass, but Reed was knocked out of bounds, and the Panthers went into the locker room down by a touchdown, 14-7.
The Panthers tied the game with 6:17 left in the third quarter when Jason Brennaman crossed the goal line to tie the score at 14.
But Norwell refused to give in and took the lead again with 3:24 left in the third stanza. Brad Schortgen found a hole in the NorthWood defense and jogged into the end zone to give the Knights a 21-14 advantage.
Again, NorthWood tied the score at 21 when Roeder connected with Brock Doty for a 4-yard touchdown, but Norwell ate five minutes off the clock before Brad Schortgen ran in for another touchdown.
When the NorthWood's Reed blocked the extra point, giving NorthWood a chance to take the lead.
The Panthers took the ball on their own 28-yard line with 6:48 left in the final quarter. With fourth down and five yards to go, NorthWood attempted a fake punt, but the Knights were not fooled as they stopped Roeder at the line of scrimmage to take over on the Panther 33-yard line.
"When they decided to go for that fake punt, it was a big play for us," said Norwell coach Gary Scott. "They have used that play a few times during the season. Roeder is a good athlete and usually makes something happen. We were just able to stop him this time."
Six plays later, Norwell scored again with 2:54 to give the Knights a 35-27 lead.
NorthWood managed to get into the endzone one last time with 1:41 when Roeder connected with Doty on a 19-yard pass.
The Panthers attempted an onside kick, but the Knights retained possession and ran the clock out to preserve the 35-27 win and their first regional victory.
"We knew it was going to be a battle," said NorthWood coach Rich Dodson. "We knew the team that was able to make the plays would come out on top. They made the plays.
"We were never able to establish a lead, and that is what hurt us."
