He was born July 15, 1944, to Harry and Pollie Hale Prater. His wife, Audrey Prater, survives in Wendover, Ky.
He was a resident of Leslie County for the last 10 years moving from Indiana. He retired from hauling milk for Foremost Farms and had driven truck for Dick Ogle Trucking. He was a member of the Stinnett Church of Christ. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and hunting as hobbies. He loved listening to Bluegrass music.
Also surviving are four sons: Paul (and spouse Debbie) Prater, Gilead; Greg (and spouse Amy) Prater, Akron; Sherman (and spouse Barb) Garringer, Rochester; and Michael (and spouse Brandy) Garringer Oregon; a daughter, Lorie (and spouse Fred) Carpenter, Rochester IN.; a brother, A.C. (and spouse Joann) Prater, Rochester; a sister, Ella (and spouse Lawrence) Manns, Warsaw; 11 grandchildren: Ryne, Caleb, Jennifer, Taylor, Sahra, Katie, Kinzie, Layne, Isabella, Evelyn and Matt; and a great-grandchild, Alayna. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Rawlins; and a brother, Monroe Prater.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor Frank Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.
Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
