DUNLAP - The Warsaw Community High School boys tennis team didn't win the Northern Lakes Conference Championships Saturday at Concord, but coach Rick Orban was impressed with how his guys performed.

"It's probably better than I was hoping for," Orban said of his Tigers' third-place finish.[[In-content Ad]]Concord won the individuals tournament with 53 points, followed by Northridge's 46 and Warsaw's 38. The Wawasee Warriors took fifth at the tournament with 17.

The lone local champion was Warsaw senior Bryce Scott, who defeated Concord's Andre Moore 6-2, 6-4 in the finals round at No. 2 singles.

"He has a pretty powerful forehand, so I was a little worried about hitting it to his forehand a little too much," Scott said about playing Moore. "I just tried to keep it to his backhand, and hope I could win."

Scott and Moore had just played each other Sept. 21 in Warsaw, with Scott getting the 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win.

"Bryce has played well all year long, but he has struggled in invitationals," Orban said about Scott. "He'd get tired and wouldn't seem to play his best tennis when there was more than one match in a day. Actually, I think the rain may have helped. He played a match (Thursday), then a match (Friday), then a match (Saturday)."

Following Thursday's prelims, tournament organizers opted to push the finals up a day to Friday, hoping to beat the rain. After playing for over three hours Friday, rain forced them off the courts.

When the teams arrived at Concord Saturday morning, leaf blowers were being used on the courts in hopes of drying the playing surface. At around 10 a.m., the courts were dried and the finals resumed.

Playing under the clouds, Warsaw squared off with Plymouth opponents on three separate courts, which led to plenty of contentious moments with argued calls.

"It seems to be a big rivalry between Plymouth and Warsaw," Orban said. "It's a matter of pride. We beat them during the regular season, and I think the guys wanted to show everyone that wasn't luck."

The two squads split on the doubles courts.

Warsaw's Andrew Cutshall and Shawn Carmichael won the third-place match over Preston Bastardo and Conner Flynn 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 2 doubles third-place match, it was Plymouth taking the win, as Matt Scheetz and Jon Tyree defeated Keaton Joyner and Shawn Carmichael 6-4, 6-4.

In yet another third-place match between a Tiger and a Pilgrim, Warsaw's Will Coen got the best of Andy Langdon at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

"Will is on a roll," Orban said. "He's been playing better, better and better. I think the match against Plymouth (earlier this season) helped Will realize he needed to play a little bit smarter. That's what has been happening."

Wawasee junior Garly Windle was also involved in a third-place match against a Plymouth player, defeating Bo Davidson 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

"He was seeded third and took third place," Wawasee coach Roger Brady said about Windle. "He did exactly what he was supposed to do."

Wawasee's next highest finish was a fifth, achieved by Ryan Smith and Nick Price at No. 1 doubles.

"Everyone won a match, so we did do what I expected," Brady said. "At the same time, we still haven't moved up that one step."

The Tigers and Warriors will begin the postseason Thursday at the Warsaw Sectional.

"We're going to be looking strong," Orban said about the sectional. "It's just that simple."

Warsaw has dominated the sectional, which also features Churubusco and Tippecanoe Valley, but Brady isn't entering the tournament thinking negatively.

"We're as ready as we ever were," he said. "Warsaw beat us 4-1 (Sept. 15 in Syracuse), and it was a lot closer than that. (Warsaw) has improved. They're a very good team, but I'm not going to go into sectional thinking Warsaw's going to beat us. If I did, then we'd be done."

Prior to the sectional, Warsaw hosts Fort Wayne Concordia today, while Wawasee is at Manchester Tuesday.
