MENTONE - Olive I. Tucker, 101, formerly of Mentone, Warsaw and Anna Maria, Fla., passed away peacefully with family by her side at 5:35 p.m. Sept. 27, 2010, in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw.

She was born July 23, 1909, in Franklin Township, Kosciusko County, to Harry and Ota Borton Smalley. On Oct. 25, 1930, in Mentone, she married Dearl Tucker, who died Nov. 30, 1987.

She was a lifetime resident of this area with the exception of when she wintered in Florida. She and her husband engaged in farming for many years and operated the Mentone Dairy. She graduated from Mentone High School in 1927. She was a member of the Scrambled Egg Symphony Band; a Mentone Home Economics Club; The Red Hat Society; and The Cedar Street Beach Club. She was a former member of Mentone United Methodist Church and attended Roser Community Church, Anna Maria.

Surviving are a daughter, Marita Tucker (and spouse Robert) Boggs, Warsaw; a son, Terry (and spouse Sandra Wentzel) Tucker; Warsaw; seven grandchildren: Kim Coleman, Goshen; Pamela Coleman Benson, Syracuse; Brett Boggs, Akron; Lisa Boggs Fawley and Scott and John Tucker, all of Warsaw; and Patricia Tucker Rice, Winona Lake; 18 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and her Florida family, including Denny, Gina and Jenna DuVal. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marilyn Tucker Coleman, who passed Jan. 2, 1957; and two brothers, Donald and Earl Smalley

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with the Rev. Amber Karkosky-Litten officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A Teachable Moment
Editor, Times-Union: My seventh-grade English teacher, Ms. Schutz, actively contributes to social conversations here in the Times-Union. She was one of the first teachers I can remember who truly inspired me academically, along with my seventh-grade social studies teacher Keith Reinholt.
