The Lady Lancers (0-1) struggled mightily with their offense, connecting on just 34 percent from the floor on 18-of-53 shooting. Saturday's game was also the first in the new format for women's basketball — a game of four 10-minute quarters rather than two 20-minute halves.
Grace's offensive issues began right after tipoff. Over its first six possessions, Grace missed four field goals, missed two free throws and had a turnover. The Lady Lancers recovered to cut the Saints' lead to 20-14 after one quarter.
Grace outplayed the Saints (1-0) in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to 30-25 at the halftime break.
The third quarter was a defensive stalemate with only 13 combined points in the 10-minute period.
Grace entered the fourth trailing by six, but the Saints refused to let the Lady Lancers taste the lead. Holy Cross pulled ahead by 12, forcing Grace to put the Saints on the line. The Saints hit 11-of-14 from the free throw stripe in the second half to ease away for the 56-47 victory.
As a team Grace was outrebounded 37-23. Grace committed 16 turnovers and forced the Saints into the same number of turnovers.
No player for Grace scored in double figures. Sarah Feasby led Grace with eight points and six rebounds, and Jesse Feitz had seven points and six boards.
Haley Richardson scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting in her first game with the Lady Lancers, and Brooke Sugg tallied seven points in her first collegiate contest. Kelsie Peterson and Gabby Miller scored six points apiece.
The Lady Lancers will return to the Manahan Orthopaedic Center on Wednesday for their home opener against IU-South Bend at 7 p.m.

Grace’s cross country team took on the Great Lakes Challenge on Saturday in its final race before the Crossroads League Championships. The women’s squad ended 11th out of 26 teams, and the men’s team finished 21st out of 25.
Katelyn McCullough had a standout performance. In the field of 296 runners, the junior placed 21st in a time of 19:36.
Ariel Arellano had a top-50 finish in 20:26, and Raven Arellano was 66th in 20:51. Karla Singer crossed the finish line in 21:49, Sarah Hoff ended the race in 22:05, and Liz Fox had a time of 22:29.
On the men’s side, Tyler Houvener was the Lancers’ top finisher in 28:01. Brandon Smith had a time of 28:54, and Brendan Hamilton was not far behind in 29:19.
Sam Hall crossed the finish line in 30:42, and Tim Drew had a time of 34:32.
“With nearly 30 schools and a very tough course, this was a challenging meet for us. Even some of the top runners were nearly a minute slower than normal,” said Grace head coach Jeff Raymond. “Kate[lyn McCullough] had a very strong race. To place 21st out of almost 300 runners is a nice accomplishment. We held a couple of guys out to make sure they’re healthy at our conference meet, so the men’s team was a bit short-handed. But Tyler [Houvener] had one of his better races and should be ready for a big race in two weeks.”
The Lancers will take two weeks off before tackling the Crossroads League Championships at Huntington on Nov. 7.

Ten minutes later, Grace went in front again. Dominic Harris muscled through a pair of Trojan defenders and left a ball for Mitchell Zeilenga who converted his clean finish at the 37:03 mark.
