Oak Hill Gets Healthy On Whitko
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
CONVERSE - The Oak Hill- Whitko matchup Friday night displayed two different styles of offense - a lightning show, and a shower of yellow flags.
Whitko ran the ball 47 times, while Oak Hill aired it out 26 plays. Halfway into the first quarter, lightning delayed the game one hour. Just to add to that, there was a combined 175 penalty yards on 18 flags.
Jimmy Linn, the senior quarterback for Whitko, has seen action as a halfback the last two weeks. Friday night, Coach Bryan Sprunger started Linn at halfback and placed junior Ben Mohr at quarterback. However, the switch did not work as expected, and the Eagles squeaked past Whitko 21-18. Although, Linn did have a great night rushing for 123 yards on 16 carries and had a score.
Whitko got off on a fast start when Ben Mohr rolled out right and connected with Tim Mason wide open for a 59-yard score right before the lightning struck. The winless Eagles came right back as Kyle Wert found Kevin Warnock down the middle of the field from their own 38-yard line. The Wildcats chose to go for 2-point conversions all three of their touchdowns, while the underdogs played it conservative with PATs.
The big keys of the game involved Linn, who ran back a kickoff in the third quarter but had it called back for a clipping penalty. He also intercepted a second-quarter pass from Wert and then fumbled trying to return it.
The Eagles threw for over 200 yards, coming on the heels of last year when the Eagles burned the Whitko defense for more than 300 yards through the air.
Whitko (2-3, 1-2) plays against Northfield Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the Three Rivers Conference day at the RCA Dome in Indy. [[In-content Ad]]
