After teaching more than 900 students in the last 41 years, Caroline Nye retired from Pierceton Elementary School. During her teaching career, Nye taught third grade and was an important member of the Pierceton Elementary School teaching staff. She was a prolific writer and was known for the poetry she wrote for all occasions as well as skits and plays that both the teachers and students performed. She wrote the school song and other songs traditionally sung at Pierceton Elementary. She was on the committee that set up the Cub Discovery Center and also helped organize many Veterans Day programs. She began the tradition of third-grade students delivering May Day baskets to elderly residents of Pierceton and was the recipient of the Real Services 2001 Age of Excellence Honoree. She helped to design the 1987 Indiana license plates and received the Distinguished Hoosier Award. Nye was honored at a staff retirement dinner in October. On Nov. 13, a gazing ball was placed in the Cub Discovery Center and dedicated in her honor. Many of her former students at the school, as well as teachers and staff, attended the ceremony.
