About 45,000 Hoosiers live in the estimated 600 nursing homes in Indiana, and many of them will be celebrating National Nursing Home Week May 11-17.
This year's theme, "Caring for Ages," celebrates the growing role of nursing facilities in the health care community, according to information provided by Indiana Health Care Association.
Locally, many of the facilities are geared up for the week, with extra activities planned daily.
Dorothy Burkett of Prairie View Health Care Center said the residents are looking forward to the highlight of the week when Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins comes in on Tuesday to call bingo.
Residents there will also enjoy bingo and lunch at the Senior Opportunity Center on Thursday, as well as being entertained by a group from New Haven coming to perform accordian music on Wednesday.
Miller's Merry Manor of Warsaw kicks off the week with a Mother's Day tea on Sunday and there are plans for activities there every day: Monday is doughnut day; Senior Olympics, with horseshoe competitions, wheel chair races and a bean bag toss, is set for Tuesday; "George & Us" will perform Wednesday; the Boot Scooters will entertain Thursday; and the week will close Friday with an afternoon cookout for residents and staff and root beer floats in the evening.
The Syracuse Miller's Merry Manor is getting residents involved in celebrating National Nursing Home Week by helping them dress funny every day. Visitors may see some strange sights there, with wacky shoes day, inside-out day, hat day and western day planned.
"In general, we'll just have a happy week," said MMM activities director Dena Dewitt. Also scheduled is a Port-A-Pit chicken dinner for residents and staff.
At least two of the seven area nursing homes have extended events throughout May, which is designated annually as Older American Month.
Grace Village Retirement Community invites the public to a concert featuring the St. Anne's Episcopal Church choir on Monday, as well as open houses set for 7 p.m. May 20; 2:30 p.m. May 21; and 9:30 a.m. May 22. The open houses will include an informational program, tour and refreshments. Anyone with questions can call 372-6291 or 372-6200.
Also at Grace Village, there will be a ladies' spring tea for residents and their families on Tuesday; wild west day with a cookout and theme dress on May 20; a wedding between a former employee and an employee's daughter on May 24; and groups of preschoolers performing various music and skits throughout the month.
Mason Health Care Facility also has a full calendar this month, according to marketing/admissions director Chris Serdinak. Events for this week are: All-American Day and a balloon launch on Monday; Hawaiian Day, with related activities on Tuesday; '50s Day, with an ice cream social and an appearance by Elvis on Wednesday; and Western Day on Thursday.
Other activities include a free blood pressure check and continental breakfast for the public ages 65 and older. This will take place from 7 to 10 a.m. Friday in the front lobby at Mason's.
Serdinak said Mason's is celebrating the whole month, with contests each week for the residents, as well as a picnic for residents and their families.
There are 599 available units for residents in Kosciusko County's seven licensed nursing homes, according to the Indiana State Board of Health.
The IHCA reports that between 1994 and 2020, America's 85 and older population is projected to double to seven million and swell to between 19 million and 27 million by 2050, making this "oldest old" population the fastest growing segment of society. "This means that all generations will be touched by long-term care and the importance of planning for long-term care needs," according to an IHCA newsletter. [[In-content Ad]]
