Number Portability Coming To Warsaw In May

The FCC ruling allowing number portability between wireless and wireline local service carriers was effective Monday in the top 100 metropolitan serving areas. Sprint's Columbia City and Arcola areas now have portability as part of the Fort Wayne MSA.
According to Roger Fisher, Sprint public affairs representative, number portability in the Warsaw area will not be available until May 24. He said, "The equipment already is in place, and we'll be ready to go."
Fisher cautions consumers to "Make sure you can take your number with you. Ask questions and find out all the costs involved before making a decision to change local service or wireless carriers. Check with the carrier you're thinking about changing to before you do anything. Don't disconnect your existing service; this could result in losing your telephone number. The new carrier will make all arrangements, including notifying your existing service provider."
Cutbacks announced.
In other news, Sprint announced Monday that it would cut back approximately 2,000 jobs during the quarter as a result of organizational redesign initiatives and cost-control measures. Fisher said, "These cuts affect workers throughout the organization - consumer and business FON and PCS wireless groups -Êat all levels and nationwide."
Sprint's new organizational structure, which goes into effect Jan. 1, is part of its plans announced in September to reduce total operating expenses by 5 to 7 percent over the next three years, or more than $1 billion in annual savings, through consolidating systems, eliminating redundancies, process re-engineering e-enablement and organizational redesign and streamlining.
Fisher said, "Part of this ongoing transformation involves combining different business units (such as local and long distance) to reduce redundancies in jobs. Most of the jobs being eliminated in Indiana are associated with the previously announced closing of Sprint's accounts receivables unit in Plymouth. The remaining job cuts will be throughout Indiana, including a few in the Warsaw area." [[In-content Ad]]
