Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival Presents 'Hamlet'

It and features a company of professional actors including NDSF veterans Andy Truschinski in the title role, Elizabeth Ledo as Ophelia and Donald Carrier as Polonius. Lisa Brescia, as Gertrude, fresh from her role as Donna Sheridan in “Mamma Mia!” on Broadway, Daniel Cantor as the Ghost/Player King/Gravedigger and Jeff Cummings as Claudius join the festival this season for the first time.
“Hamlet”, William Shakespeare’s most famous play, will be presented in the Decio Mainstage Theatre in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Tickets are on sale now for $12-$75 with special discounts available for groups of 10 or more. Enjoy a special family performance Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. with four tickets for only $32.

Bell directed last season’s acclaimed production of “The Merchant of Venice” and “Twelfth Night” in 2009. He is a nationally and internationally recognized director, choreographer and author. In Chicago, Bell’s work has received 41 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations and won 11. He has directed numerous productions at Chicago Shakespeare Theater including “The Taming of the Shrew”, “As You Like It”, “Murder for Two” and “The Comedy of Errors”. He has directed more than 30 productions for Marriott Theatre Lincolnshire and has directed both on and off Broadway in New York, working with such artists as Lauren Bacall, Patti LuPone, Carol Channing and Chita Rivera.
Internationally, Bell worked in London’s West End (“Hot Mikado”, Laurence Olivier Award nominee), Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall (“Theatre Of Dreams”), Barcelona (“The Spirit Of Atlanta” for the 1992 Olympic closing ceremonies), Berlin, Paris, Budapest, Vienna, and the European Tour of the “Dirty Dancing Concert Tour”.
Truschinski returns to NDSF after appearing as Bassanio in “The Merchant of Venice”. He has performed in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “The Comedy of Errors” and “Macbeth” at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, “The Comedy of Errors”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “The Winter’s Tale”, “Henry IV Parts 1 and 2”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Hay Fever” at American Players Theatre; “Love’s Labor’s Lost” and “Romeo and Juliet” at Riverside; and “Heartbreak House” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at Montana Shakespeare in the Parks.
Brescia’s Broadway credits include Elphaba in “Wicked”, Amneris in “Aida”, Cleo in Twyla Tharp’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’”, Marion Halcombe in “The Woman in White” and most recently as Donna Sheridan in “Mamma Mia!”
Additional actors returning to Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival for Hamlet are Matthew Goodrich as Horatio, Scot Shepley as Voltemond, Ryan Belock as Francisco and Fortinbras, and ensemble members Carolyn Demanelis, Victoria Flees and Kimberly Gaughan.
Making their NDSF debuts are Matthew Bell as Cornelius, Ben Estus as Guildenstern, Ty Fanning as Barnardo, Nathan Goodrich as Rosencrantz, Sarah Gosselin as Player Queen, Jacob Grubb as Laertes, Corey Moss as Reynaldo, Spencer Neiman as Second Gravedigger, Kody Walker as Marcellus, Ed Wasserman as Osric and ensemble members Clare Cooney, John Corr and Charlie O’Leary.
The creative team for Hamlet, led by Ryan Producing Artistic Director Jay Paul Skelton, includes scenic designer Marcus Stephens, costume designer Jeremy Floyd, lighting designer Kevin Dreyer, original music and music director Ethan Deppe, sound designer Robert Steele, fight director Kevin Asselin, text coach Susan Felder, vocal coach Siiri Scott, prop master Jesse Gaffney and stage manager Calyn Swain.
Shakespeare at Notre Dame is a regional center for Shakespeare performance, educational outreach and academic research and includes the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Actors From The London Stage, visiting guest artists and lecturers, touring productions, and new media library collections.
