Not Voting For Nisly

Editor, Times-Union:
On the front page of the Times-Union for Oct. 1, Curt Nisly reacts to the NRA's endorsement of him with this statement: “Our right to bear arms is our most basic human right; all of our other rights stem from this right.”
One hardly knows where to start with this patently absurd statement. Suffice it to say that the founders of our country put several things (at least) above the right to keep and bear arms, which they saw as necessary (so they said) to maintain a well-regulated militia. At the very least, to put this right above the more fundamental rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and even above the right to free speech (the First Amendment) needlessly and dangerously elevates the Second Amendment above its rightful place.
For this reason, I will certainly not be voting for Mr. Nisly; anyone who has such a poor understanding of our constitution, of the basis of our life together as a country, and who elevates a subsidiary (if important) right lacks the understanding to serve as a public official.
