Not Personal

Editor, Times-Union:

Letters by Silver Lake Clerk Angie Glass, her husband, sister and former employee make it clear they're upset by my letters. I believe their letters, which seem to have the same theme and use many of the same words, were written with the intent of making my letters seem personal.

They accuse me of writing letters to humiliate and criticize Glass, however, the letters have pertained to actions and job performances of the clerk and council. They call request for documents harassment. Glass knows documents are public records. Anyone can look at them or request copies. If the books are in order, it shouldn't bother her when I get copies or write letters.

These three don't seem to want the truth told. Citizens have the right to know how their money is handled and town business is conducted. After attending the Sept. 13, 2005, meeting and reading the Times-Union report, I wrote the first letter to give more details.

Before the letter was printed, I had to give proof the books weren't balanced. I had proof at the meeting, but Glass yelled, "I am balanced! I said, "State Board told me to take it to the prosecutor's office, but I didn't." Stanley Williams said, "Do it then!" I did and that led to the state police investigation. I never said money was missing, just the books weren't balanced and there were discrepancies.

Two letters commented on the Oct. 11, 2005, meeting but didn't include the financial ambassador talking of helping Glass balance and making transfers between accounts in order to balance. This was the second time Glass had help to balance.

One letter accused me of continuing to complain about 2004-2005. One states there was no wrongdoing from 7-16-04 through 6-16-06. The 2004 audit had 14 findings. I've pointed out findings such as balancing books and paying bills before council approval haven't been corrected. Sept. 07 books and bank statements don't agree. Oct. 07 accounts payable register indicates checks were written before council approval.

All letters commented on the upcoming election. I would've ran for clerk if Teresa Howell hadn't. Yes, I want Howell elected. She took pride in her work and followed SBOA guidelines. I worked with her for years and know she's the better clerk. Yes, some customers felt they were treated rudely when Howell wouldn't defy an ordinance to accommodate them. Following ordinances is the clerk's duty.

Williams said Howell was hard to get along with. Considering the source and he's held a grudge since she contradicted him. They accuse us of not caring about the town. If I didn't care, I wouldn't get documents and write letters, I would just ignore it all. If Howell didn't care she wouldn't be a candidate for clerk.

I stand by my statements and opinions. Town records back my statements. My opinions are based on actions and job performances of the clerk and council. Letters and other incidents won't intimidate me or cause me to change my mind.
