The Northridge swim teams sure do know how to humble their opponents.
The third-ranked boys team in the state, the Northridge Raiders handed the Warsaw Tigers their first setback of the year Thursday in Warsaw, 124-61, while the Lady Raiders won 117-68, also the Lady Tigers first loss.
Despite coming up short, Warsaw coach Nathan Long was realistic about what to expect against the class of the Northern Lakes Conference.
“We were right about where we were supposed to be,” he said about the scoring. “They’re a good team and the type of program we want to be. We have to go after them.”
On the boys side, the Raiders feature two of the best swimmers in the state, as senior Austin Flager is ranked No. 1 in the 50 free and 100 back and senior Brennen Berger is currently the top swimmer in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
Against Warsaw, Flager held court, winning the 50 free in 21.46 seconds and the 100 back in 52.65.
As for Berger, he didn’t swim in the meet, but it didn’t really matter.
“They’re the No. 3 team in the state, so that’s expected,” Long said about the strength of the Raiders.
Warsaw did get some good swims from its boys, as sophomore Spencer Davidson won the 100 fly in 55.61, just beating Northridge junior Takoda Friesen’s 55.66.
Davidson was also second in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:02.77, while Northridge junior Jonathan Stoller was first in 1:00.63.
Sophomore Jayden Parrett also swam well in the 100 back, placing second in 55.60, and joined Davidson, freshman Matt Wildman and senior Andrew Thrasher on the Tigers’ second-place 200 free relay team, which finished in 1:53.43.
Warsaw junior Dean Katris provided his team with its second first-place finish, winning the meter dive with a score of 203.95.
While Warsaw has shown it has some good young talent, Long is looking for more.
“It’s like I tell them everyday, ‘One guy can’t win a swim meet,’” he said. “It takes a collective effort of eight at least to win. It’s great to have those fast guys, but everyone else needs to be up there too.”
For the girls, it was junior Ashley Van Wormer leading the way, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.18 and placing second in the 200 IM (2:27.70).
“We’re going to look for her to win NLCs, but that’s going to come with a little more practice,” Long said of Van Wormer’s 100 breaststroke.
Also for the Lady Tigers, freshman Liz Slough was under a second away from knocking off Northridge senior Ashley Owens in the 100 fly, but team-wise, the Lady Raiders were as strong as their male teammates.
“Overall, my assessment is, we need to work on endurance,” Long said. “We’re dying at the end of races and we need to go a little farther.”
The Warsaw squads are back in NLC action Saturday, traveling to Goshen for a 9:15 a.m. meet.
