The North Webster/Tippecanoe Township Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a grant to be used to purchase equipment.

U.S. Rep. Mark Souder announced Thursday the department has been awarded a $164,561 grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

The department plans to use the federal funds for airpacks, 32 sets of gear, including helmets, coats, pants, gloves and a thermal camera.

"I'm pleased to announce that the North Webster/Tippecanoe Township Fire Department has been awarded this grant to help improve its operations and safety program," Souder said in a statement.

"This funding will help firefighters provide the very best protection to the residents of Kosciusko County."

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is designed as an opportunity for Congress to work with the Homeland Security Department to enhance basic fire service delivery across the United States.

Fire departments could apply for eligible activities in two areas, including operations and safety and vehicle acquisition.[[In-content Ad]]
