No Yolk! Mentone Hatches Plan To Build 'Egg'citing New Water Tower

MENTONE - In connection with their $1.4 million water project Mentone is pursuing bids from water tank makers for an egg-shaped water tower tank.
Humorous concern was raised at Monday's council meeting for the wellbeing of confused geese flying over Mentone. But, despite the questions of whether the egg would be scrambled before assembly in town, the egg was cited as an added tourist attraction to Mentone.
Mark D. Downey Jr., of Commonwealth Engineers, Indianapolis, expressed concerns over how the Indiana Department of Commerce would react to the town spending grant money on a novelty.
The award of the grant for the water project was partly based on financial need. Downey said the $50,000 egg might appear frivolous.
The request was not discounted by Downey, who said he would pursue bids from two water tower builders who have built novelty tanks before.
"This is not the most unusual request I've ever had, but it ranks near the top," he said.
A standard tank can cost around $250,000, Downey said. He estimated the additional cost of a nonstandard tank to be $50,000.
Downey also provided two time lines for Mentone's $1.4 million water project, encouraging the council to take a rapid course to have the project complete before the grant money expires in 1998.
Shannon McLeod, also with Commonwealth Engineers, addressed the need for archaeological research to get approval for the tank site. The coucil approved McLeod's request to solicit bids for the research from state universities and award the research to the lowest-priced and soonest-available team.
The council instructed Downey and McLeod to proceed as rapidly as possibly to get the project completed in 1997.
In other business the council:
4 Approved the purchase of a new flail mower for $1,550, and a gas monitor for use by the street department and fire department.
4 Discussed the purchase of Eastside Station for use as a police station, clerks office and EMS station.
The leaf pickup in Mentone has been completed for 1996. Anyone needing leaves picked up should bag them and call the clerk's office to arrange pickup.
A open meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 23 to close out the 1996 books. The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 6. Employees of Commonwealth Engineers will be present to answer questions about the water project. All meetings are at the town hall. [[In-content Ad]]
