No Trouble For Triton

HAMLET - No. 9 (A) Triton had just finished beating Westville in impressive fashion on Thursday, but head coach Gayle Perry was not thinking about her team's 15-3, 15-3 win. She was already looking ahead to Saturday's matchup with South Central and the possible sectional championship match against No. 2 Michigan City Marquette.
After all, Saturday is the day that Perry and her team have had circled on the calendar since the beginning of the season. Sure, it was nice to beat Westville and move on to the second round, but the goal is now in sight for the Trojans - the goal of winning a sectional title and maybe more.
"We've got one goal in mind," Perry said after the dismantling of the Blackhawks. "We came here to win the sectional championship. We're anxious for Saturday, and we're really looking forward to that Saturday night match (the sectional championship match)."
Perry did talk about how the difficult schedule her team had to play through in the last week of the regular season will help her team down the stretch. At the Clinton Prairie tournament, Triton went 2-2, but lost to a 4A school and the No. 1 team in the state in Class A. Then, Triton came back with two consecutive wins to close out the tournament and a big win over Wawasee on Monday night.
Triton never really struggled on Thursday night against Westville, although the Trojans trailed 2-0 in both sets. But Jenna Weissert, Megan Sarber and Jessica Kintzel came up big every time with kill after kill, and Kendra Blackford and Heather Barron shared the assisting duties.
In game No. 1, after Triton fell behind 2-0, Westville made two consecutive bad hits and Sarber picked up a kill to knot the game at 2-2. Leading 6-2, Sarber and Kintzel combined for five kills the rest of the way and Blackford served the final six points for an easy 15-3 win.
The second game was almost identical for the Trojans. Once again, they fell behind 2-0 and, once again, they came storming right back. This time, however, they were sparked by a pair of kills from Weissert and eight straight service points from Sarber to go ahead 8-2.
Leading 12-3, Weissert had two straight aces and Westville made a hitting mistake to clinch the match.
So this Triton team pushed the bar up another notch for future teams to aim at with win No. 26, two better than the previous school record. But once again, Perry cares little about that if her team doesn't win the sectional title.
"They're (Michigan City Marquette) tough," Perry said. "They're definitely the favorite. But, these kids as sophomores set a goal. We're going to win a sectional. That's what we're after. As long as we come out and put everything on the floor, the winning and losing will take care of itself. I don't care what the outcome is as long as we play hard."
Now Triton (26-7) will face South Central at 12:30 p.m. at Oregon-Davis High School and, with a win, will play in the championship at 7:30 p.m. Triton has already beaten the Satellites once this year. [[In-content Ad]]
