No. 10 Goshen Slams Warsaw
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
It was a physical and frustrating time for the Warsaw wrestling team Tuesday against No. 10 Goshen.
The Tigers entered the match with the Redskins hoping to move up in the Northern Lakes Conference. What they got was banged up, as well as their second NLC loss, 39-27, of the year.
The night started with 103-pounder Scott Snyder suffering a loss as well as a possible broken hand. It did get better for Warsaw, and the Tigers took a 17-7 lead when Goshen's Colby Barkes got disqualified on an injury default for an illegal hold on Warsaw's Greg Patrick. It caused another problem for Warsaw as Patrick suffered an injured elbow and his future status is not known.
The Redskins disagreed with the call by the official. Oh, how they disagreed. Goshen did, however, get the momentum as the Redskins captured the next three weight classes, including two impressive pins at 140 and 145 by Andrew Yoder and Mark Oswald respectively.
"They (Goshen) thought he stayed down because he wasn't hurt, but to get the victory," Warsaw coach Tony Boley said of the Patrick match. "But the kid is hurt. They got momentum off of that. No doubt about it."
Warsaw got some momentum of its own, winning matches at 152 and 160 from Matt Zellers and Chris Wilson to take a 24-22 lead.
Dominating wins at 171 and 189 put Goshen up 33-24 lead heading into the 215-pound match between Steve McKinley for Warsaw and Goshen's Matt Ganger. Leading 2-1, McKinley got Ganger off the ground and slammed him to the mat. Ganger suffered an injury and was helped off the mat, but with the victory, after McKinley was disqualified.
"We still had a chance to win it," Boley said. "I felt really good going into 215. Our kid is responsible to put him back on the mat. Whether it was a slam or not is up to the official. I thought our kid excepted very well. He could have went nuts like they did (on the other injury default.) We are not going to do that. After that, it was over."
The Tigers' Joey Navarro's win at 275 made the final 39-27.
"We switched a couple of wrestlers around at 145 and 152, and it didn't work out," Boley said. "We were hoping to get a win there. It came down to the last few seconds and who wanted it more, and they wanted it more."
Cory Patrick led Goshen's Oswald at 145 pounds 7-5 before getting pinned in the second period.
The loss leaves Warsaw at 13-2 overall and 4-2 in the NLC, which may or may not be tied with Goshen for second place. The Redskins, already with one NLC loss, tied Plymouth earlier this year, and the Pilgrims say they won the match on a tiebreaker. Goshen (18-2) disagrees.
"It is a disappointing loss," Boley said. "I don't know what is going to happen in the conference. We are just looking forward to Saturday."
Warsaw is at Concord Saturday for the NLC Championship at 9 a.m.
