New System To Link Schools, 911 Dispatch Center

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

A new fiber optics system will connect Kosciusko County's 911 dispatch center with all the schools in the county.

Tom Brindle, county 911 director, said the system will cost the county about $11,000, and will allow the county to hook into the statewide education network. The system also will allow the county dispatch center to connect with school corporations like Triton and Whitko in nearby counties.

Brindle said the connection would allow dispatch personnel to use the schools' security cameras during an emergency to gather information from the scene before emergency personnel even arrive.

"We won't monitor their system," Brindle said, "but, should something happen in a school, we could immediately go into their system and use their cameras to isolate the area."

Brindle said the new system could help emergency personnel know in which area of a school building a fire is located, how bad it is, or where people are injured. Faster information can mean faster response time.

Brindle said contractors will work to install the system this summer to have it up and running by September.[[In-content Ad]]
