New Signs Coming To North Manchester Street

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

NORTH MANCHESTER - Residents on East Street in North Manchester soon will see new signs reminding drivers of the speed limit.

Wednesday night, North Manchester Town Council approved a motion to put 30-mph signs up on East Street at the recommendation of the North Manchester Traffic Commission.

Residents on East Street approached the traffic commission with concerns about speeding vehicles on the street. East Street residents presented a petition stating that they are concerned for the safety of the 13 children who currently live on the street.

The petition states: "Vehicles often drive at excessive speeds on our street. Their speed, combined with the lack of sidewalks, makes it dangerous for children to walk or stand along our street."

The group presented several possible solutions to the problem, including the posting of speed limit signs.

Town Marshal Dave Young said he has been working with the group for about four months, and said the matter will be reviewed again in February.

In other business, the council:

n Heard an update from the committee looking into the new water treatment plant. The committee has met with two firms about the construction of the facility. The committee plans to present its recommendation at the council's Dec. 19 meeting.

n Heard the back part of the Firehouse building has been removed and cleanup is taking place. The next step for the project is to design and get estimates to put a new structure on the back of the building.

n Held a public hearing on the water rate ordinance that will raise water rates in the town. No one made comments on the ordinance, and the second reading of the ordinance was approved 5-0.

n Approved an amendment to General Ordinance No. 12, 2007, which creates an additional handicapped parking space in the Medcor parking lot.

North Manchester Town Council members are Don Rinearson, president; Laura Rager; Stan Escott; Diane Haupert; and Christopher Garber. Clerk-treasurer is Carrie Mugford.[[In-content Ad]]
