New Prairie Misfires In 51-33 Loss At Triton
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
BOURBON - So lopsided was Wednesday's girls basketball game between Triton and New Prairie that New Prairie finished the game with 12 field goals, one more than Triton junior center Betsy Salyer.
Triton and New Prairie entered the Northern State Conference game with 3-1 records, but the Cougars shot themselves out of the game by halftime.
Triton won 51-33, thanks to New Prairie's 12-of-54 (22 percent) shooting. Salyer hit 11 of 15 (73 percent).
"New Prairie scored 60-something against LaPorte in their first game," Triton coach Mark Heeter said, "so I know they can score."
Salyer turned in a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds. Forward Rachel Speicher added 12. Jessie Bunton and Jessica Vaundry led New Prairie with seven points each.
Heeter mumbled "Sloppy, sloppy," as he walked off the court after the game, and here's why: The Trojans were up 20-6 with 3:08 left in the first half despite 10 turnovers.
But the 10 turnovers paled in comparison to New Prairie's frigid 3-of-23 (13 percent) shooting to the same point in the game. The Trojans finished with 25 turnovers to New Prairie's 23.
While the Cougars could not find the basket, Heeter hesitated to give his defense all the credit. Several times New Prairie's own offensive ineptness on this night cost the Cougars. They had countless lay-ups in the first half, but the girls either got too far under the basket or flat-out blew the shot.
"They missed a lot of lay-ups, in the first half especially," Heeter said. "If they made all of them, it would have been a different story. Our man-to-man defense was better in the second half, and we didn't give them those easy looks."
All of Triton's offense came inside. Triton shot 22 of 50 from the field; all 22 field goals came in the paint, half of them provided by Salyer.
"If we can get her the ball, she has a step to the basket, and she won't miss too many," Heeter said. "People may see she scored 25 and start keying on her, but that's fine. We have other girls who can score."
Although it is only Dec. 2, Triton already has played half of its regular season home games. After losing at North Judson to begin the season, Triton hosted the next four games, ending with New Prairie. The Trojans won all of them by double-digit scores.
Now Triton has one home game left in December, two in January and two in February.
"Sitting 4-1, the schedule looks good right now," Heeter said, "but now we're gonna have to learn to win on the road. There's gonna be a lot more games down the road where the game will be tight at the end and we'll have to execute our offense or we won't get the job done."
Triton is 1-0 in the NSC, while New Prairie dropped to 0-1.
