As of Thursday afternoon, investigators were still sorting through details of what appeared to be a road rage incident that began near Syracuse and ended in downtown North Webster when one driver crashed his pickup into a building and was then shot and injured by police.
“We still have a long way to go as far as several interviews to do,” Smith said. “We probably won’t be talking to the officer until Monday.”
Smith said as bad as the situation was, it could have been much worse.
“We’re tremendously lucky no innocent bystanders were injured,” he said. “This was right at 6 p.m. during a very busy time of day right downtown.”
A detailed narrative of what happened likely won’t be released until the middle of next week.
Smith said the ISP will be working to piece together what happened and trying to determine the events that let up to the incident.
“Right now we have no idea what would cause somebody to fly off the handle like that,” he said, adding that his agency would be focusing mainly on the crimes that were committed once the incident began.
The incident apparently began with a motorist traveling south on Ind. 13 in an SUV.
The motorist of the SUV told police he was driving near the railroad crossing in Syracuse when he saw a man he knew driving a pickup truck pulling a trailer heading north.
The pickup driver then turned around and started following the SUV, the driver told police.
The driver of the SUV told officers he knew the man who followed him, but it had been months since they last talked.
The SUV was rammed several times from behind by the pickup and shots were fired by the pickup driver as both vehicles continued south on Ind 13, the SUV driver told police.
At one point, police believe the SUV ran off the west side of Ind. 13 in front of the North Webster Church of God, sideswiping and knocking down several sections of construction fencing. The SUV made it back onto Ind. 13 (North Webster’s Main Street) and continued south, eventually turing east onto Huntington Street.
The pickup driver ignored attempts by a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputy driving an SUV to pull him over.
The incident ended when the officer collided with the pickup at the intersection of Huntington Street and South Main Street. The pickup then crashed into the Link Accounting Group building at 405 S. Main Street.
The officer fired several rounds through the door of the pickup.
Witnesses to the incident said Wednesday evening that they heard several rounds of gunfire as the pickup drove through town. Those witness accounts have not been confirmed by police.
Smith said the pickup driver was transported via ambulance to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne where he was sedated today.
The officer was treated and released for unspecified injuries from the collision and the SUV driver was not injured.
