The Lakeland Art Association applied to the National Endowment for the Arts when the association's lease expired at 109 N. Lake St., to make room for the Justice Building expansion.

The association has since found a home on Buffalo Street in Warsaw.

However, an ArtsREACH Project grant was awarded in 1999 and ended in October 2000.

The grant, which totaled $8,900, provided for a community arts survey and a directory of artists.

More than 400 Kosciusko County residents responded to the survey regarding development of a visual and performing arts center.

The survey indicated a need for such a building. Toward that end, Lakeland Art Association Inc. signed a six-month option to purchase the Eagles building, on the corner of South Buffalo and East Market streets, Warsaw, from the Saemann Foundation last year. That option expired Nov. 30. An extension has been granted through July 31.

Long-time association member and Warsaw china artist Linda Dilling served as the grant director.

ArtsREACH Project funds also called for a directory of artists, which is available at the Lakeland Art Center, 116 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw.

Dilling has been replaced by a board of directors, who have been operating under the Lakeland Art Association Inc.

Recently the board has disengaged itself from the LAA, becoming The Center for Arts and Culture Board. Members are Michelle Boxell, Trish Brown, Alin Cass, Bob Condon, Dilling, Bonnie Gore, Dan Hampton, Sally Hogan, Milt Holmgrain, Mary Ellen Rudisel Jordan, Joan Moore, DiAnne Smith and Howard Woodward Jr.

The separation relieves the art association of the financial responsibility of owning and/or maintaining a building.

The new corporation's purpose is to encourage, develop and nurture the arts in Kosciusko County by, and not limited to, providing a physical home.

A certificate of incorporation has been granted for The Center for Arts and Culture Inc., as a nonprofit domestic corporation.

There has been some discussion about renting the Eagles Building until it could be purchased. Before a consensus was reached a mattress business has leased the first two floors. Their lease lasts until April 2002.

The Center's board is developing a business plan, acquiring directors and officers insurance, and applying for 501(c)(3) status, which will enable donors to receive tax exemptions for their gifts to the center.

Bylaws allow the board to consist of 10 to 16 board members, with 13 currently seated. Interested persons are encouraged to speak with board members if they are interested in serving on the board.

The board meets on the third Thursday of each month. [[In-content Ad]]
