SYRACUSE - Nelson Auer, 88, of Syracuse, died at 8:40 p.m. March 11, 2008, in Miller's Merry Manor, Syracuse.

He was born Oct. 29, 1919, near Dewart Lake, to John and Etta Mae Wogoman Auer. On Dec. 31, 1940, he married June L. Baker, who survives.

A lifetime area resident, he formerly owned Auer's Service Station for 29 years, and Maxwelton Golf Club, where he operated the restaurant for two years in the early 1970s. He then moved into a sales position at Mastercraft, Shipshewana, retiring in the mid 1980s. He was a member of American Legion Post 223, Syracuse; Masonic Lodge, Milford; and Elks Lodge, Ligonier; and a past member of Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club. He wintered in Sun Lake Estates, Lake Placid, Fla. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1942-45.

Also surviving are a daughter, Janice (and spouse Dave) Wright, Syracuse. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, with the Rev. Ken Robinson officiating, and with military honors by members of American Legion Post 223. A private burial will be at a later date in Syracuse Cemetery.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
