Neither Injuries Nor Shortcuts Keep Warsaw From Winning
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
In its girls cross country meet with Northern Lakes Conference rivals NorthWood and Concord at home Tuesday afternoon, Warsaw had to overcome a few obstacles to win.
For starters, junior Hilary Barlow ran last night's meet with injuries. Add to that two of Warsaw's runners were disqualified for taking a short cut.
In the end this wasn't enough to slow the Tigers down as they beat NorthWood 18-38 and topped Concord 15-47. NorthWood edged Concord 16-45.
"The girls seemed to run real strong," said Warsaw coach Paul Sibray. "We had four girls right up front."
Barlow won the race with a time of 15:29.
"She's running injured basically," said Sibray. "And she can run like that? I'd hate to see how she could run healed."
Summer Boyd (15:47), Jennifer Finch (15:47) and Rachel Rondeau (15:48) finished second, third and fourth for the Tigers. Nina Bearss crossed the line first for NorthWood, a fifth- place finish with a time of 16:09. She was followed by Cort Sandy (16:33) in sixth, Heidie Schneider (16:56) in seventh, Kim Yoder (17:08) in 10th and Terri Schuller (17:24) in 14th place.
Warsaw's Kristin Brown, who would've finished in eighth place with a time of 16:58, and Melonie Albert, who would've crossed the line in 13th place with a time of 17:16, were disqualified.
"We had a problem with the course," said Sibray. "A couple of the girls were disqualified for taking a short loop in the course. In the heat of battle anything can happen."
With the pair of wins, Warsaw moves its conference record to 3-1. Sibray said he didn't keep track of an overall season record. NorthWood moves to 8-3 and 3-1 in the NLC.
"We talked about it before the meet," said Sibray. "If we wanted a chance at the conference title, we had to do well tonight. You don't have to say much to these girls. They all have strong wills and know what to do."
On the boys' side of things, NorthWood's Aaron Hoover crossed the finish line in front of the rest of the competition. Hoover won the race with a time of 16:46. He was followed by teammates Mark Davidhizar (17:08) in second, Andy Rummel (17:55) in seventh, Jon Lechlitner (18:34) in 12th and Jason Meyers (18:40) in 15th.
Warsaw's best finish came from Jacob Sweatland, who finished third with a time of 17:29. He was followed by teammates Matt Krallman (17:42) in fifth, Jason Sibray (17:50) in sixth, Michael Jenks (18:17) in ninth and Nate Ridderman (18:29) in 10th.
With a 20-41 win over Concord and a 27-31 win over NorthWood, Warsaw moves to 12-6 on the season and 3-1 in NLC action.
