Nearly All Electrical Service Restored

Kosciusko County REMC restored electrical service to its customers by midnight Saturday, following a siege of outages caused by an ice storm.

"We have a few individuals waiting for electricians to make repairs at the service entrance," said REMC CEO Lynn Collyer. "And we have a couple of guys working to repair those type of things."

Ice formed on tree branches and power lines overnight Jan. 31. The weighted limbs took out the lines and caused the lines themselves to loosen and cut off power.

On Thursday more than 100,000 customers were without electrical power.

Just as power came back online, slick roads contributed to an acident in which a truck hit an REMC utility pole, knocking out the electricity to customers again this morning.

Up to two inches of snow fell in northern portions of the county, making travel hazardous this morning.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. spokesman Chris Taelman said power was restored to all but 150 customers in Kosciusko and Elkhart counties.

NIPSCO brought in additional crews Friday.

"The last time we had something like this was in 1998," Taleman said, "and Kosciusko County was't affected."

Goshen had blizzard-like conditions Sunday, which hampered repair efforts in that area.

NIPSCO serves all of the municipalities in the county, while the REMC has customers in outlying areas. [[In-content Ad]]
