By Staff Report-

With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant patients are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure.

The Children's Organ Transplant Association is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients.

Volunteers are raising funds for transplant patients like local child Gracie Black, Warsaw.[[In-content Ad]]Gracie is the daughter of Shawn and Ashley Black, and the sister of Katelyn, Dylan and Makenna. Her grandparents are Esther Black, Kelly and Kim Timmons and Sue Timmons.

Born May 24, 2005, Black was diagnosed with Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency. Doctors at Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis, performed a life-saving liver transplant Feb. 14, 2006.

An estimated $25,000 is being raised by Warsaw volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising activities. Individuals and groups interested in more information can contact Campaign Coordinator Kelly Timmons at 574-551-4865.

Donations may be made in person at any Lake City Bank branch location using account number 002727471 or mailed to the Children's Organ Transplant Association, 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, IN 47403. Checks or money orders should be made payable to COTA, with "In Honor of Gracie Black" written on the memo line of the check. Secure credit card donations are also accepted online at www.COTAforGracieB.com

Gracie's family has asked for assistance from the Children's Organ Transplant Association. The organization's priority is to assure that no child is denied a transplant or excluded from a transplant waiting list due to lack of funds. One hundred percent of all funds raised are used for patients' transplant-related expenses.
