National Debt

Editor, Times-Union:

I would just like to make a few quick points in my last letter before the midterm elections:

- National debt in January 2001: $5.7 trillion.

- National debt on January 20, 2009: $10.6 trillion.

- National debt on October 21, 2010: $13.6 trillion.

- Average yearly growth national debt from 2001-2009: $612 billion.

- Increase of national debt from January 2009-October 21, 2010, $3 trillion.

- Unemployment rate January 2009: 7.6 percent.

- Unemployment rate September 2010: 9.6 percent.

Considering there is no difference between a "Democrat" and "Republican," how is it that a $5 trillion increase in federal debt by an "ego manic, self-righteous, lying coward" in eight years just wrong; but at the same time, yet another ego manic, self-righteous, lying coward who increases the debt $3 trillion in one year gets a free pass. If you have an explanation for that, M. Tapp, I would surely like to see it.

Increasing government spending has never produced economic recovery and it never will. Criticizing the rich for having too much money to me says that there is a limit to the American Dream. Even the Speaker of the House says that capitalism has to be regulated to make sure everyone profits. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but is the government regulation of capitalism called socialism? If that is the case, someone needs to go to Europe and ask them how it is working out for them. People in France are rioting because the thought of having to work until at least 62 is too painful for some of the younger people in France.

One last point I want to make. Our identity is being taken away from us. I was always taught that being an American was something that the world strived for. The thought of the American Dream of being successful when other places rejected you was something people worked hard for.

Schoolchildren were taught to idolize Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Lincoln. Today it is about Paris Hilton - who has done what for the betterment of society? Or Miley Cyrus - who can sing (maybe), but is 17 going on 21. Then there someone with a nickname of "Snooki," really, what kind of nickname is that? How can someone with a nickname like "Snooki" be a person who is idolized.

Thomas Jefferson said that, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Now I am surly not suggesting violent revolution (ask the French how that worked out) but ousting power hungry politicians and restoring the American Dream. So everyone get out and vote and let us begin repairing the foundation that made America great so we can hear about the greatness of America, not how kissing a pig is detrimental to the pig.
