n High school renovations to cost nearly $12 million

By BURKET - Schematic estimates for the Tippecanoe Valley High School renovation and additions are estimated at a total of $11,980,154.-

Bart York, executive vice president of The Skillman Corp., Indianapolis, presented the approximate costs to the school board Monday. The costs include $3,761,631 for new building additions, $7,661,561 for renovations and $290,357 for site work.

The size of the renovation is 141,000 square feet, with the new additions being 36,000 square feet. Work includes a new kitchen, mechanical and electrical replacements, updating the building to code, new science rooms, six new classrooms, administration space and renovation of the lecture room.

York told the school board the schematic estimates represent what Skillman Corp. believes the design is and what they think the project will cost.

"We feel very confident with where we are right now," York said.

The figures include a 5 percent design contingency because, he said, "we know there is stuff in the building the architect hasn't found or will have to do."

The estimate does come under budget, he said. "Our approach is to save you as much money as we can."

The next step is design development. If all goes according to plan, York said, Skillman Corp. should receive the drawing for the work Nov. 17 and present the design development to the board Dec. 8. He said they estimate the final design will be received around Feb. 16-27, and then on March 8 they can present that to the board. At that time, they also will ask the board to authorize them to receive bids.

On April 15, York said, they hope to receive bids and then give the construction bid award recommendations to the board on May 10. He said he expects there to be 15 bid categories with a total of 50 to 60 contractors bidding.

Groundbreaking, hopefully, he said, will be the first week of June.

"The spring is traditionally a good time to build," York said.

Board member Hal Hoffman asked if there was any chance the timeline for the project could be speeded up.

York said while that is a possibility, he did not think the design would be ready. Also, if they hurry the architect's design, that may sacrifice attention to detail. York said he knows the timeline is a little later than originally scheduled, but in the whole scheme of things, the end result will be better.

The school board unanimously approved Skillman Corp. to move to the next phase of the project, the design development. [[In-content Ad]]
