I am Jan Nelson, wife of Jerry Nelson, running for Winona Lake Town Council. A couple of years ago, I saw this darling little home for sale and called the owner. It was an elderly lady who had already moved into a retirement situation. Her home was already sold, but before we hung up, she asked, "Are you the Nelsons that go face-to-face with the town council?" I answered, "Yes, we're trying to stand up for people's rights." I was afraid she was upset because there had been many articles in the newspapers about the confrontational council meetings. I tried to explain, "Things don't always happen exactly the way the paper says when you read about it." She laughed quietly and came back with, "Too bad, I like what I read!"

I'm telling this true story because there is a need in Winona Lake for someone on the council like my secure, intelligent husband Jerry Nelson. After reading the current councilman Jeff Carroll's letter last night, I wondered what makes him so afraid. Jerry has never raised his voice in a council meeting. When the lady talked about him going "face to face," she appreciated he has the inner strength to ask questions the council may not always have answers for right away. He raises his hand and makes comments that many of your readers wish they had the nerve to say. Many people are afraid to express their concerns. Jerry is not intimidated by the Winona Lake Town Council team or anybody else but God. If Jerry wins, will the council be able to survive and work together? Well, of course, and they will be healthier with some checks and balances. Twelve years of a council that is joined at the hip would not be healthy. After all, the President of the United States can only be in office eight years.

Here's an appropriate take-off of Edwin Markham's quotation:

"They drew a circle that shut me out

Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout

But love and I had the wit to win

We drew a circle that took them in."

If Jerry wins, and other council members allow themselves to appreciate what Jerry Nelson can offer working on the same side of the fence, they will find him a willing, productive participant in creating a win-win council for all of Winona Lake.

Voting locations are Wayne Township 1 at 337 Grace Village Road and all the rest at Grace College's Gordon Recreation Center, 100 Rupe Drive (behind the Winona Lake Fire Department). Call 372-2332 if you are confused. See you at the polls!
