SYRACUSE - Mutual Federal Savings Bank is looking to expand its services in Syracuse.

Thursday, the bank petitioned for an exception from the Syracuse Zoning Board of Appeals for a bank drive-through in a commercial district.

The property is on the east side of Huntington Street and zero feet north of Pickwick Street in Syracuse.

After some discussion with attorney Steve Harris, representing the bank, concerning the location of the proposed building and options that might eliminate the need for the exception, the exception was approved. There were no remonstrators.

Mutual Federal also petitioned for a variance to allow a commercial drive-through from the south right of way. The property is on the east side of Huntington Street and zero feet north of Pickwick Street. The variance was approved.

Jean Green requested a variance to permit a change and alteration to a nonconforming building by allowing an awning to be constructed 3 feet into the right of way, 8 feet high, in a commercial district. The property, Huntington Street Bar & Grill, is on the east side of Huntington Street and 100 feet south of Main Street. It was approved.

Bob Reed requested a variance to allow a commercial addition 6 feet from a right of way. The property is on the south side of Main Street and 187 feet west of Huntington Street. The property is both a home and a commercial office. The board approved the variance.

Lakeland Post 1342 Veterans of Foreign Wars petitioned for an exception for the alteration to a private club by allowing a 40-foot by 56-foot addition in an industrial 2 district. The property is on the south side of Chicago Street and 400 feet west of Syracuse Street.

The VFW also sought a variance to permit the construction of an addition 19 feet from a property line.

Both cases were represented by Gene Myers and remonstrated by Tammy Nelson, the adjoining property owner on the back side of the property. Nelson wanted a privacy fence built so the noise would be reduced. Myers agreed that one of the intentions of the addition was to install fencing. Both of the VFW's petitions were approved on the condition that privacy fencing be in place within one year.

Vance Lopp sought a variance permitting multiple industrial incubator units in one building. The property is on the south side of Brooklyn Street and 1,044 feet west of Maple Street. Lopp said he didn't know he was out of compliance with current ordinances as to the use of the property and he wants to make things right. The property is divided into nine personal storage units and four larger units being used for various businesses.

The petition passed with the following conditions: a limit of five uses on the property with the nine storage units being considered one unit, all must fall within the limits of the industrial 2 district, the current outside storage problem must be resolved within 60 days and the east units can expand only into the west units if the exterior west doors are sealed.
