He was born April 9, 1944, in Carbon Hill, Ala., to Murray F. Sr. and Vaudean Sawyer Rutledge. On Jan. 21, 2003, in Key West, Fla., he married Margaret “Peg” Biltz, who survives.
He was a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. He was a 1962 graduate of Warsaw High School. He served in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany then returning back to the U.S. with an honorable discharge in 1965. Back in the 1960s he worked for Warsaw Police Department as a patrolman for three years. He retired from Sprint as Linemen after 30 years.
He was a devoted Christian. He enjoyed classic cars. He was a competition judge in horse shows, and he was also an excellent horse rider, and he loved all animals. He was known as the gentle giant.
Also surviving are: his daughter, Heather Rutledge, Warsaw; two sisters, Joy Ann Conley, Warsaw, and Sherry White, Tennessee; a brother, Kenneth (and spouse Brenda) Rutledge, North Dakota; many nieces and nephews; three step-grandchildren: Alec James Maxwell, Warsaw; Kaleb Matthew Maxwell and Tristin Kenneth Maxwell, both of Fort Wayne; and his beloved dog, Molly. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Wanda Dickey and Helen Hope Jones; and a brother, Kerry Leon Rutledge.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at American Legion Circle, Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw. There will be military honors by American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, both of Warsaw, and the Military Funeral Honor Guard with Pastor Bob Brown officiating.
No calling is planned.
