SYRACUSE - Ken Mounsey, organizer of the annual Freedom Ride, has announced that he will be stepping down as executive director of Operation Support Troops, the Ride's governing body.

Operation Support Troops started in 1994 and was incorporated six years ago. "In the almost 14 years since this started, I have come to find out it's a difficult road," Mounsey said. "It's taken a turn to a different direction than the direction I originally wanted it to go. I wanted this to be for the veterans, the soldiers, and their families, but it's gone in a totally different direction.

"There won't be another Freedom Ride after this year. It's time for me to spend more time with my kids and my granddaughter. I need to focus more on myself. The stress is overwhelming. I know people appreciate what has been accomplished, and they enjoy it, but the work is more than I'm willing to do at this point. The politics involved are overwhelming as well."

Mounsey hopes that the concept of the Freedom Ride and its support for veterans, soldiers and military families will be continued eventually. He also offered thanks to all the business owners, individuals and the town of Syracuse for helping make the Freedom Ride successful for the last five years.[[In-content Ad]]
