Motorcycle enthusiasts participated in a 100-mile ride Saturday in Wabash and Kosciusko counties to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The Big Ride For Kid’s Sake was sponsored by Lake City Bank. The route started at Brandt’s Harley-Davidson in Wabash and went through Rochester, Warsaw, Pierceton and back to Wabash.

The ride made a stop at The Bowling Alley on Detroit Street in Warsaw where riders received free popsicles and water.

The ride was a way to raise awareness about the need for mentors for youth in Kosciusko County.

It also raised funds to match the 35 children who are on a waiting list, according to Lindsey Best, Big Brothers Big Sisters community development coordinator.

Members of the Wabash and Kosciusko County chapters of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education and Warsaw’s chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association participated in the ride.

Motorcyclists from the area also participated.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department escorted the ride.

Laster Boggs, Warsaw, is one of 55 motorcyclists who participated in the ride.

Boggs is a member of Warsaw’s chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association and is a Big Brother mentor.

Boggs said he has been a mentor for the past year to a 10-year old boy who lives in Milford.

“As a Big Brother it is rewarding to see my Little Brother’s progress,” Boggs said.

Boggs said he plans to mentor his “little” until he graduates high school.

Terry Kessler, Christian Motorcycle Association member, said it was rewarding to participate in the ride.

“Our organization tries to help others in time of need and as Christians that is what we are called to do,” he said.

Don Barton, Warsaw, a motorcyclist and Kosciusko County ABATE member, said he enjoyed the motorcycle ride.

Barton said growing up he had a friend who had a Big Brother, and he saw the impact it had on his friend’s life.

“It think it is important to help kids in need and as an adult I am able to give back to an organization that helped my friend,” Barton said.

Dave Yotter, Winona Lake Fire Department firefighter, said he was emailed about the ride by the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.

Yotter said the fire department has participated in the Bowl-A-Thon Big Brothers Big Sisters does to raise funds for the organization.

He said he thought participating in the motorcycle ride would be a good way to help the organization.

“With more and more single parents it is good for children to have a mentor,” Yotter said.

“Being a volunteer firefighter you give back to the community and this is a good way to give back to an organization that helps youth,” Yotter said.
